POWER BI’S 20-ITEM LIMIT

Unable to open Report

Only 20 items can be opened at one time. In the header, close an item and then try again.

These are your browser tabs (Chrome / Edge)

These are Power BI’s internal item tabs (reports, dashboards, datasets)

WHY IT HAPPENS

Not your browser tabs

Power BI / Fabric keeps opened reports, dashboards, and datasets active in its internal header bar—even after you navigate away.

At 20 active items, the 21st report is blocked.

Power BI’s 20-item error, explained

The limit applies to the internal horizontal item bar in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric. Closing Chrome or Edge tabs does not clear those open items. Use the X buttons in Power BI’s header, including items tucked into the three-dot overflow menu. If items remain stuck, sign out and back in or clear site data for app.powerbi.com.

Read Microsoft’s Fabric multitasking documentation and our complete troubleshooting guide for more detail. Learn how the LumioBI Chrome extension handles report navigation.

Common questions

Does the Power BI 20-item limit count Chrome or Edge browser tabs?

No. The limit counts items in Power BI and Microsoft Fabric’s internal horizontal item bar, not browser tabs.

How do I fix the Power BI 20-item error?

Click the X on open items in Power BI’s top item bar. Check the three-dot overflow menu for hidden items. If ghost items remain, sign out and back in or clear site data for app.powerbi.com.

Will LumioBI close a tab with unsaved changes?

No. LumioBI skips tabs with unsaved changes when it closes inactive background items before opening the next report.
